Reviving Islam in My Life
Developing Relationships for the Aakhirah
Muhammad (SAW) has said:
“A man is upon the religion of his best friend, so let one of you look at whom he befriends.”
When trying to get closer to someone, the believer should focus not on the qualities that person shows outwardly, but on their inner qualities. These are more important because:
- They are not temporary, and
- They can also affect others by having benefits, as well as causing harm.
One should question and scrutinise what is the underlying Niyyah of the friendships they have. When it is pure and for the sake of Allah, that person becomes an intercessor for them in the Aakhirah.
- When maintaining friendships of intellect and wisdom, the believer remains safe.
- Yet one also has to question if they are foolish to others at times; if they are people of Hikmah to others.
- The test here is being judgmental of others. Rather, the believer must understand that people not beneficial to them should be avoided.
- Make an intention not to react to them, and to create barriers against their words.
- This includes people who openly transgress against Allah.
- The people you surround yourself with are those who can make or break the believer.
Look for people who have one’s interest at heart, and not their own personal gains and interests for a friendship.
Allah bestows the believers people for the Aakhirah – and in that relationship is no other benefit, but that which is for the sake of Allah.
